Best and Worst Singles of 2003:
What we listened to, what we shut off...
2003 wasn't shaping out to be a good year. First we had another Ja Rule/Ashanti collaboration that was more like a colla-bore-ation, and then Madonna decided she was cool again and could therefore release not one, but two, satirical attempts on the things she knows best: Americans and Hollywood. Even Pink lost her edge when she released "Feel Good Time" and thought she could get away with its suckiness because she had a cameo in Charlie's Angels 2: Full Throttle. But then, the duo of the year, Beyoncé and Jay-Z, fought back and catapulted Beyoncé into the forefront as a formidable solo artist. 50 Cent garnered his fame by keepin' it real (and feuding with Ja Rule all the way there), and OutKast released a double CD that cemented their claim to fame as one of the freshest sounds in the hip-hop industry. In rock and alternative, Avril Lavigne was thankfully absent, making room for other bands to showcase their (ahem, real) talents. The White Stripes rocked their way to number one, as did British Band of the Year Coldplay. Even though newcomer Evanescence's biggest single, "Bring Me to Life," was on the soundtrack of one of the worst movies of the year, it didn't hurt album sales. And even though Matchbox 20 went too adult contemporary for my tastes, they still topped the charts.
One of the biggest trends this year was the remake. Whether it was Sheryl Crow, No Doubt, or The Ataris, everyone was covering everyone else. Well, as long as P. Diddy isn't involved, there's not going to be any blood shed over it. But sadly, the biggest news happened outside of the studio. Hopefully 2004 will bring the focus back to music, and not to the many petty feuds that these artists have brought upon themselves. ¤ C.Ho.
