Best & Worst Singles of 2006:
The good, the not-so-good, and the atrocious horrors...

Michelle

The best (from left to right): Cham, "Ghetto Story Chapter 2"; Gnarls Barkley, "Crazy"; Lupe Fiasco, "Daydreamin'"; Keyshia Cole, "LOVE."

The music scene over the past 365 days has been – how do you say…boring! Every year end, I tend to bemoan the state of music. I constantly ask myself, what’s up with hip-hop? Where are the true R&B singers? Where’s the real music? I’m truly starting to sound like a broken record.

On a positive note, there usually is a glimmer of hope within all the crap. A performer or group will come along and restore my faith in the music industry. Last year it was my boy k-os; this year it is Gnarls Barkley.

I listened to their entire album, St. Elsewhere, and I loved every single song! The CD is a blend of old soul music, rock, funk and everything else you can think of. They certainly need to get some props for being innovative.

On the complete flipside, there has been an overabundance of really blah music. Remember last year’s “Laffy Taffy” from D4L? Well, “Chicken Noodle Soup” from DJ Webstar and Young B has taken its place as the most ignorant song ever produced.

All right, enough of my incessant complaining. Read my picks for the best and worst songs of the year. Hit me up and let me know if you agree, disagree or don’t care! ¤ Michelle

The BEST
I didn’t have much to choose from. I had to rack my brain long and hard to try and think of the songs that moved me. Unfortunately, I only came up with a top five.

  1. “Ghetto Story Chapter 2,” Cham featuring Alicia Keys: This is pure dancehall goodness. Makes me wanna book a trip to Jamaica!
  2. Crazy,” Gnarls Barkley: Get the CD. You won’t be disappointed.
  3. “Lost Ones,” Jay-Z: Now, this is what I'm talking' about. Thanks, Hov!
  4. "Daydreamin’," Lupe Fiasco featuring Jill Scott: This song is sheer brilliance.
  5. "LOVE," Keyshia Cole: I completely love everything that she has ever released. Her voice captures pain, strength and vulnerability. She is my new fave singer.

Honourable Mention
So Sick,” Ne-Yo: I know that this song may not seem as a true contender among my top five singles, but I fell hard for this song. I like the production, and the lyrics are completely relatable. It also lets me know that guys get a little emotional over a break up too.

The WORST
I could have easily written a top 20 list for the worst singles of the year, but I pared it down and this is what I came up with.

  1. “Chicken Noodle Soup,” DJ Webstar and Young B: Why was this song released?
  2. “London Bridge,” Fergie: I wish that Fergie, Will. I. AM and the rest of the BEP would just go away!
  3. “Bossy,” Kelis: Love your hair, hate this song!
  4. “Shortie Like Mine,” Bow Wow featuring Chris Brown: No comment. Too easy.
  5. “Unfaithful,” Rihanna: Can you say tone deaf?
  6. “A Public Affair,” Jessica Simpson: Dumb.
  7. “Invisible,” Ashlee Simpson: Dumber.
  8. Ring the Alarm,” Beyoncé: I love ya Bey, but c’mon! This song ain’t good!
  9. “Money Maker,” Ludacris featuring Pharrell Williams: I like Luda’s music, but he lost me with this song!
  10. “Number One,” Pharrell Williams featuring Kanye West: I think Kanye was on this track just for the money.
