Best & Worst Singles of 2007:
Singles that made us turn it up, turn it off, and throw away our radios...
Michelle
The best: "Rehab," Amy Winehouse; "Good Life," Kanye West; and worst: "Crank That," Soulja Boy; and "I Got It From My Mama," from stinky will.i.am.
As outrageous as this may sound, 2007 saw some genuine shining moments. We got booty-shakin’ club anthems from Timbaland, Nelly Furtado and Justin Timberlake, we got a blast from the past courtesy of Amy Winehouse and Sean Kingston, and we were blown away by new artists like Robin Thicke and J. Holiday. When I think about this year, a few names come to mind – Rihanna, T-Pain, and Akon. They all had a tremendous amount of success and consistently released hits throughout the year. Think about it, what would 2007 be without the phenomenon that is “Umbrella”? Even if you didn’t like the song, I’m sure that you sang the chorus! And we can’t forget about the hardest working R&B brothas T-Pain and Akon. They too had an impact on this year since they were damn near featured in half the songs released! Even though Akon got himself into a little bit of trouble (grinding on that young girl in Trinidad and tossing a concert-goer into the crowd), he still achieved huge success touring, starting a record label and being featured on singles with Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, T-Pain and Gwen Stefani.
So overall I can say that I did in fact enjoy the music over the past twelve months. But don’t be fooled, there were tons of songs that boggled my mind. I’m still shaking my head over some of the songs that sat high atop the charts for weeks and weeks (why was that damn lip gloss song so popular?).
Before I prattle on, with no further adieu, here are my picks for the best and worst singles of the year! ¤ Michelle
The Best
“Bed,” J. Holiday
He’s cute and the song is smoldering. There is no better combination! I hope that his next releases are equally hot.“Irreplaceable,” Beyoncé
Who doesn’t love a scorned girl anthem? Thanks, girl!“Give It To Me,” Timbaland featuring Nelly Furtado and Justin Timberlake
Gettin’ your dance on and feeling good type of song. I enjoyed every minute of it.“Rehab,” Amy Winehouse
A friend of mine told me about Amy Winehouse almost two years ago (yes, CBW lives!), and I didn’t give his prediction of her impending popularity much thought. Don’t I feel stupid?!! Yes, CBW you were right! My bad!“Lost Without U,” Robin Thicke
I am a fan of his just for this one song. I need to hear more from him!!“No One,” Alicia Keys
I already love Alicia and this song makes me appreciate her even more.“Buy You A Drank," T-Pain featuring Yung Joc / “Bartender,” T-pain featuring Akon
Both of these songs are like the soundtrack to 2007 for me. As ghetto as that may seem (these songs are about gettin’ crunk), they just remind me of a few really fun nights.“Get It Shawty,” Lloyd
I have played this song every single day since it was released. I can’t explain it, I just looooove this song!“Big Girls Don’t Cry,” Fergie
This is a deep and personal song and yes, it’s actually from Fergie! I wanted to hate this song on principle (read: I’m not a fan of Fergie, therefore anything she releases I will hate!!! Kidding!), but I couldn’t deny that Fergie showed us her skills as an artist.“Good Life,” Kanye West featuring T-Pain
I like this Kanye song because it’s not a serious type of song that he’s accustomed to releasing, it’s just a really playful song. The classic Michael Jackson sample is hot too!The Worst
“Big Thangs Poppin’,” T.I.
I like T.I but sometimes his rapping style is akin to yelling. This song gave me a headache!“I Got It From My Mama,” will.i.am
will.i.am is one of the most annoying people…ever! His descent into producing really crappy songs astounds me. This song in particular is probably the worst thing he has ever inflicted on the listening public. I really hate this song!“LoveStoned/I Think She Knows” / “Summer Love,” Justin Timberlake
Sorry JT, but I didn’t like much of what you released this year. These two songs are way too boy band for me.“Crank That,” Soulja Boy
This song is really, really bad, but all the videos of people doing this dance is funny!“Lip Gloss,” Lil Mama
Probably one of the dumbest songs produced this year. I don’t understand why this song got sooo much attention.“Beautiful Liar,” Beyoncé featuring Shakira
This single really wasn’t easy on the ear.“Beautiful Girls,” Sean Kingston
Yes, I know that this song is cute and innocent, but that’s what’s wrong with it. It was way tooo cutesy for me to stomach. Eww!“I’m A Flirt,” R. Kelly
Why is R. Kelly still making music???“Walk It Out” / “2 Step,” UNK
Is it me, or are these the same song?“Girlfriend,” Bow Wow & Omarion
There are no words to describe how poorly conceived this song (and album cover) is.
