Chick Flicks:
Movies we love...
Chick flicks are not the sorts of movies that I am usually drawn to. Especially since they tend to focus on two types of characters: a helpless, pathetic woman pinning for an unsuspecting man, or an angry, bitter woman who was wronged by a man. Basically, any movie that stars Julia Roberts, Sandra Bullock or Kate Hudson.Trust me, I'm not as harsh or cynical as I sound (or maybe I am?). I love to see a female lead in a movie, but as soon as the story gets too sappy and sweet, I lose interest (Dirty Dancing is the worst movie ever made!!). Nonetheless, there were a handful of chick flicks that I enjoyed before I vowed never to watch them again.
Here are a few movies that still get to me. ¤ Michelle
Mermaids (1990)
Director: Richard Benjamin
Starring: Winona Ryder, Cher, Christina Ricci, Bob Hoskins
Why We Love It: This movie stars Winona Ryder (pre-5-finger discount problem), Cher, and a young Christina Ricci. Charlotte (Ryder) is an awkward teen that is confused about herself and the rest of the world. She has thoughts of becoming a nun, even though she is very much attracted to a guy that works at the church that she attends. I love this movie because it reminds me of being an awkward teenager who was naïve about sex, love and relationships.

Sleeping With The Enemy (1991)
Director: Joseph Ruben
Starring: Julia Roberts, Kevin Andersen, Patrick Bergin
Why We Love It: Christine and I were talking about this movie a while ago, and she called it a man-hating movie. I didn't see that. I see it more as an empowering movie. I also like the blossoming relationship between Laura (Julia Roberts) and Ben (Kevin Andersen). Okay, he was the epitome of a really, really, sensitive man, but I found it sweet that he was trying to win her affections by taking her to an amusement park.

Four Weddings & A Funeral (1994)
Director: Mike Newell
Starring: Hugh Grant, Andie MacDowell, Kristin Scott Thomas
Why We Love It: I can honestly watch this movie a million times. This is a romantic comedy done right. It's not over the top like Pretty Woman, or sappy. It combines intelligent dialogue with good acting. Props to Hugh Grant for blending charm and wit to his loveable character.

Jackie Brown (1997)
Director: Quentin Tarantino
Starring: Pam Grier, Robert De Niro, Robert Forster
Why We Love It: I'm pretty sure that this movie wouldn't be considered a typical chick flick, but I love that the movie centers around a strong, older female (Jackie Brown is played by blaxploitation goddess, Pam Grier). The movie is about a slightly cheated-by-life flight attendant who foils a gun dealer out of a half million dollars. She's vulnerable yet tough, and very much able to throw down with the best of them. Watching her walk off with all of the money proves she's a badass chick not to be played with. Jackie Brown is, without a doubt, my favourite female character of all time.

How Stella Got Her Groove Back (1998)
Director: Kevin Rodney Sullivan
Starring: Angela Bassett, Taye Diggs, Whoopi Goldberg
Why We Love It: Aside from some bad dialogue and Taye Diggs' sad attempt at a Jamaican accent, I like this movie. It's not the greatest love story ever made, but watching the sparks fly between an older woman and younger man (Angela Bassett and Taye Diggs) is insanely sexy! The backdrop of the sunny island doesn't hurt either.
