No one resembled a female wrestler in 2003 more than Britney Spears in the "Me Against the Music" video. With her Janet Jackson-inspired flashy style and wide, muscular shoulders, she redefined the whole buff-and-in-charge look. I was half-expecting her to pin Madonna to the wall in a chokehold (and would have preferred to see that instead of another faux-lesbian kiss). You don't have to wear barbells in your nostrils or paint your eyes black to achieve the goth look. Just look at Amy Lee, front woman of Evanescence. The Material Girl is used to revamping her look, but her biggest challenge came when she started popping out babies. What is a woman, who is used to pushing the envelope when it comes to fashion, to do? This year we saw Madonna in several videos, toned down - and in "American Life"'s case, politically shut down. But that doesn't mean that she's traded in the bustiers in for the sweats. In "Me Against the Music," she opted for a tasteful power suit that was sensible enough for the boardroom and yet flexible enough for her to gyrate on-screen with Britney. Off-screen, she was seen sporting Prada with sneakers while she walked with her child. It seems obvious that Madonna, who gave birth at 41, is longer the woman that wore a wedding dress in her "Like A Virgin" video. In fact, at the MTV Music Awards, her black ensemble was like a muumuu compared to Britney and Christina's skanky outfits - which just goes to show you that, in some cases, motherhood will not only bring joy into your life, but also give you taste.Best Simple Elegance
If you want to see how it's done, look no further than Nicole Kidman. Not only is she graceful on-screen, but off-screen as well. You'd think that after making the best-dressed list year after year after year that she'd lose her touch, but this year has been no different. You almost hate her because she never seems to have a bad day. Case in point: at the Oscars, her simple black dress (by designer Paul Gaultier) would have faltered on anyone else, but Kidman's forte is in the details, whether it's earrings or a pair of strappy sandals.
