Fall fashion trends that will keep you fabulous…
With the fall season quickly approaching and fall fashions beginning to make an appearance in your favourite boutique, the question is: what are the key fashion trends for fall 2006?
This fall is another eclectic season filled with the return of the military influence, brocades, gold metallics, and fur trims. The mannish look, also known as gender bender, has returned. These returning themes mixed with a 40’s influence of truly ornate and detailed sleeves, big collars, short dresses and long tunics make for an exciting season where anything goes. The military influence is back and bigger then ever. Designers like Dolce & Gabbana and Ralph Lauren are embracing the look by introducing coats with gold ornamented buttons and borders. The military style is being teamed up with the gender bender influence of wide leg trousers and a collared shirt. Unlike last season, this military feeling is more opulent with lots of detailing in the buttons, the collars, and even the fabrics. These detailed pieces are even being worn with jeans to give a more updated feeling to an ongoing trend.
The look of luxury is alive and well for the fall. Brocade jackets in strong colours like greens, reds, and purples are adding a pop to this season’s staple colours black, brown, and charcoal grey. And yes – black is back. Coats in rich coloured fabrics are being trimmed in fur on the collar, and even on the cuffs. The lavish feeling of the 40’s has once again returned.
Even hotter than black this season is a return to greys. Designers like Bottega Veneta and Max Mara are showing them in a monochromatic colour scheme. Greys are being shown in every shade and hue, from dark charcoal to the more blue-greys, and even the metallics. An easy way to update your wardrobe: incorporate a charcoal trouser; you can wear your coloured jackets back to grey as easily as you wear black.
Volume is another key word for the season; volume in the sleeves, collars, coat styles, and skirts. The sleeves of coats and tops are fuller and balloon shaped. Collars of coats are wider and more dramatic with trapeze and swing jackets making an appearance. Fuller skirts are making a dramatic statement with fur or bands of velvet on the hemlines, and these wider skirts are being paired with more fitted tops. Lastly, a trend that began in the junior market is making a statement in women’s wear, tights and hosiery. With hemlines rising, the introduction of tights has made wearing a shorter dress or skirt more acceptable for the more mature woman. While I still believe dresses and skirts should be age appropriate, tights have given women who have less-than-perfect figures the ability to feel more comfortable.
I always tell our readers that you should take the trends of every season with a grain of salt. Incorporate a few of this seasons trends into your wardrobe and reintroduce last fall's trends by adding new buttons to a jacket, or by wearing a trendy metallic belt, or chunky jewelry in silver. Most of all, enjoy the warm colours and fabrics of this fall season and don’t be afraid to try new things. ¤ Erin
