What's Hot:
Wearable trends, gray is back and bigger then than ever…
If you’ve read my previous fall trend reports, you know that I love the fall season. I love everything about fall, from the leaves changing colours and falling from the trees, to the slightly cooler weather, and of course the clothing. And since we live in Toronto, the fall and winter seasons actually begin sooner and last longer than any other season, so what to wear becomes the burning question.
So let’s begin with one of the biggest trends moving into this fall season: the colour gray. Now gray has been around for several seasons and has been shown in the military trends, as well as the gender bender theme from last season, but this season it isn’t just in suits. We’re seeing it in blouses, dresses, and high-waisted trousers and skirts. Designers like Michael Kors are showing different tones and textures of grays being mixed and matched together, while Calvin Klein is pairing the same shade of gray in various fabrications.
Chunky knit sweaters are another big trend for the fall season, and what better way to curl up and be warm and comfortable than with a great chunky sweater? Not only are these sweaters being worn long with a pair of tights, but also as a sweater coat, paired with a great pant, pencil skirt, or jean.
The dress trend, which was so popular for the spring season, has transitioned into the fall season, with the same theory behind it: Diane von Furstenberg’s great graphic prints, shorter length dresses worn with tights, or boots for the winter, as well the always flattering wrap dress. Now for our Canadian winters, I do have to say that a wrap dress just does not seem appropriate. So why not invest in a jumper style dress, wear it with a great white blouse underneath, and boots? It is an easy way to bring the dress trend into your fall/winter wardrobe. Ralph Lauren showed this trend but did the jumper dress with a turtleneck underneath, another great idea!
One of the other major trends being shown are ballooned sleeves. Now this is a trend that has moved forward from last fall, but this season it’s shown in a much more wearable way. Designers have moved the style from just jackets to beautiful flowing sweaters, with a newly designed and easy to wear bell sleeve.
Another trend, which made a splash during the spring/summer season, are metallics. Metallics are back for fall. Matte silver and pewters are being shown for day wear, and gold, silver and copper are showing up in gowns and more formal wear for evenings. One of the things that I love about metallics is that paired with a simple black, brown, navy, or gray pant, it is an easy way to update your favourite outfit – or even your look. Adding this trend can be simple, either with a pair of shoes, or even a great blouse.
During the summer, everyone was wearing tights under long tops and dresses. For the fall, opaque stockings are taking the place of short tights. Yes, a dark dress paired with dark stockings is the way to go. Designers like Jill Stuart, Charles Nolan and countless others showed them on the runway for their fall/winter collections.
So for this fall season, embrace the new trends and have fun. Mix and match your favourite styles from last season with this season’s. Why not consider purchasing a great pair of gray trousers if you don’t already have a pair, or get into a chunky sweater that suits your style and taste, or even try bringing a little metallic into your wardrobe? Whatever you decide, remember that fashion has no rules, you can mix and match to your heart’s content. ¤ Erin
