What's Hot:
Colour and texture take centre stage...

While you’re thinking about winter boots and snow, spring merchandise is arriving in your favorite store. Spring returns with last season’s more popular trends, but with the trouble in the world’s economy, designers everywhere are adding life to their collections by making the most of colour, texture, and volume.

There are two big trends this season. The first is colour and the second is texture. Hues such as cantaloupe are showing up on designer’s runways and making a tropical splash. You can’t have a spring season without the classic return to the always chic black and white. Done right, this classic style can have an ease and sophisticated-ness that is unbeatable. The season would not say “summer” if designers did not include prints in their collections. While graphic prints and florals are always in style, some designers like Nanette Lepore are mixing multiple prints and putting them together. Definitely a daring look, I don’t see the average women embracing this unique trend.

In the texture category, gorgeous and very feminine ruffles are making a comeback. Popping up in wraps, coats, and dresses, ruffles can’t be ignored. Another trend adding texture this season is the boyfriend jacket. This oversized jacket is being shown in a relaxed tailoring, with the sleeves scrunched up. Love it or hate it, you will definitely be seeing your favorite celebrity sporting this look. Lastly, sequins are adding a much-loved sparkle to many collections. Being worn subtly or obviously, you’re going to see sequins in both casual wear as well as evening.

Accessory trends include fun with double belts. Two different belts in size and colour mixed and matched are worn together over a jacket or on a dress. In addition to the trend of layering two belts is the return of the skinny belt. Adding texture, colour and shape, the addition of a skinny belt can add pizzazz to any outfit. Head scarves in beautiful silk and chiffon fabrics are being shown on runways in New York and London. Balancing the girlie feature of printed fabrics is the hot accessory for spring, the chunky bracelet, which is edgy yet sophisticated. A trend that was big in fall and has gone forward to spring is the chunky necklace. A nod to Coco Chanel, the idea is to let your outfit be a blank canvas and allow your jewelry to shine. Oscar de la Renta and Vera Wang really showed it the best on the runways.

So however you embrace this season’s trends, like I always say, have fun. Do it in your own way and your own terms. ¤ Erin
