I tried. I really did. But somehow, I just couldn't get around it. And so here I am, writing about vintage fashion. But, mind you, not in a very eloquent way.

Recently, I became very obsessed with buying a headscarf, or a handkerchief that I could fashion into one. I don't know where this compulsion came from, but I knew that I had to have one. It was much like the time I really wanted those tops that came with separate sleeves that you slipped on. I bought two - one black and one white - and ended up wearing them once each before they became obsolete.

But this scarf I would wear every day, I was sure of it. So sure that I mentioned it several times to Michelle, who was patient enough to not roll her eyes at me (although she couldn't help but put her head down on the table in a defeated gesture). One day we found ourselves in Kensington Market. I looked around. Aha! I was bound to find a scarf there.

We hit the first store we saw, and found a basket full of scarves and handkerchiefs. Michelle took to rifling through it while I watched. I trusted her opinion, and besides, it was a very hot day and the store did not have air conditioning, so I was bound to pass out. She picked up a funky pink scarf that would have looked great on her. I shook my head. Pink and me went together like Michael Jackson and a woman - not a great combination.

She finally found a brown and beige handkerchief, and I liked it. It was retro yet understated, and since my wardrobe doesn't consist of many colours, I was sure to find something to match it with. Also, it kind of went with my hair. I asked Michelle if she could try it on for me, as I am not only a non-shopper but also very lazy. I liked it on her and decided to buy it. For $2.00 (plus tax) I couldn't go wrong.

I haven't had a chance to wear the handkerchief yet, but I like the purchase. This being my first time venturing into the retro scene, I was apprehensive but very pleased in the end. I was also very fortunate that Michelle didn't punch me in the gut when I asked her to try it on for me. If you're looking for something funky, definitely try Kensington Market for some good bargains. ¤ C.Ho.
