Dear Shopaholic:
Dress to impress, fall trends, room make-overs...
Dear Shopaholic,
GOT A QUESTION?
I recently started a position in an architectural firm. I was recruited straight from college, and although the position is great, I just don't seem to get their dress code. I'm still used to the college wardrobe - jeans, runners, and a ratty t-shirt - but I think it's just a tad bit too casual for this office position. What does business casual entail? Are sandals going overboard?
R. S.You definitely need to get rid of the jeans, t-shirts, and runners. If your office does allow for participates in casual Fridays, you can wear jeans, but I would stay away from runners and t-shirts. I like cardigan sets, sweaters, button-up shirts, even some fitted cotton T's. For work wear, I would suggest pieces that can be mixed and matched together. You could wear a tank top, but wear a cardigan or light blazer for some coverage. Also, I suggest investing in pieces that are classic to any wardrobe, like a good pair of black pants. You should have your basic pieces and then throw in some trendy pieces to keep yourself current.
Dear Shopaholic,
What kind of trends do you see for the upcoming months? What kind of stuff can I keep around, and what should I throw out?
Need An UpdateThe poncho is still sticking around, and denim is always a staple. You won't see much hot pink in the fall. Try new colours like brown, purple, and teal. You'll also see an array of textures, from tweeds to cords. Keep those pointed-toes shoes; they're still very hot items. You may want to get them in new colours, or purchase pointed-toe boots for the cool nights. For those who cannot squeeze themselves into those little pointy shoes, there's relief with the rounded-toe shoe. You can style them as flat ballet slippers or with heels. We had bright colours in summer, and the fall is bursting with the rich hues as well. Shoes and boots are now in a variety of colours.
Dear Shopaholic,
Shopaholic says: If you love collared shirts but are hankering for a new look, try pairing it with a v-necked sweater or with a dressy blazer. Both looks can be grabbed at The Gap.
I have a really hard time buying knee-length boots. See, I have petite feet and wider calves, so I often find that the shoes that fit my feet are too narrow for my legs, and the boots that are wide enough for my legs are too small for my feet. What do you suggest I do?
H. T.I suggest looking for boots that have stretch in the leg. Also, buying leather boots will help, as synthetic materials don't have the same elasticity as leather. Go to your neighbourhood shoe repair store and ask if they can stretch out the leather for you.
Dear Shopaholic,
I've always wanted to spruce up my room, but I don't have a big budget for it. It looks pretty plain. What kind of things can I add that will give it an updated look?
Room With A ViewThe cheapest way to update your room is with a fresh coat of paint. Try using more than one colour for a playful look. I love Ikea and you can usually find some inexpensive décor items to add to your room. Maybe some shelves, mirrors, artwork, frames, bedding. Take a walk through the showroom and you'll definitely be inspired.
Dear Shopaholic,
I've been hunting around for some flower pins to add to my wardrobe, but I can't seem to find any nice ones. Where do you suggest I look?
B. W.Try looking in Le Chateau or The Gap; they have flowers in plenty of colours and textures that range from $10 to $20. For something less costly, drop by Queen Street, where the fashion district resides. Visit textile stores that sell accessories. You will find them for a bargain, and all you need to do is add the pin.
Dear Shopaholic,
I really love collared shirts, and I just took a peek in my closet and discovered that they have consumed half of my wardrobe. What kind of things can I pair up with these shirts to get different looks?
Collared & Loving ItCollared shirts are great for mixing a matching. For cool days and nights, throw a V-neck sweater on top. For something a little sexier, wear a camisole and leave the top few buttons undone. For a professional look, pair the collared shirt with a blazer. ¤ Phan
