Man of 2003:
Sean Paul...
Well, well, well. I had to ponder long and hard on who I wanted my Man of the Year to be. There were just so many contenders for the title. Should it be my thuggish homeboy 50 Cent, or should the crown be bestowed to the dancehall king, Sean Paul??? And the winner is…
... Sean Paul.
Happygrrls is quickly becoming my personal homage to Sean Paul, but my man is so deserving of all the accolades!
2003 was definitely the year of Sean Paul. He released great songs, worked with every artist under the sun, and made the world realize that dancehall music cannot be ignored.
I knew that Sean Paul made it when I saw him perform on some random late night talk show (a show that rarely showcases the work of rap artists, much less dancehall artists). My mouth dropped to the floor to see Sean Paul bumping and grinding to the music while the audience sang along with him. That was a proud day for me.
Even though it is apparent that Sean Paul has mad skillz on the mic, music was not his first career choice. He, in fact, had hopes of pursing a career in hotel management. Aren't you glad that my boy changed his mind?
Lured by the music, Sean Paul became involved in the dancehall vibe. He started writing songs, and then ironically, found more success as a performer. He hooked up with Jeremy Harding (the producer responsible for Beenie Man's still-a-hot-song, "Who Am I") and released "Infiltrate" and "Baby Girl" in 1997.
A series of wicked tracks followed - "Deport Them," "Hot Gal Today," and "Work With It." These singles increased his profile and led him to join forces with the Dutty Cup Crew. During this time, he released songs as a solo artist and as a part of the Dutty Cup Crew.
In 1999, Sean's career was solidified when he toured Europe, Japan and the US. He even found time to collaborate with Mr. Vegas and DMX on the song "Top Shooter" for the Hype Williams movie, Belly.
Sean Paul has been a permanent fixture on the charts with the releases of "Gimme the Light," "Get Busy," and "Like Glue." From the time those songs hit the streets, he proved his longevity as an artist. And while I am writing this article, I realize that the man is still releasing music. The sweet and sexy song - "I'm Still In Love With You" - is currently in the top 20 singles.
What makes him my man of the year is that he is a talented, dedicated artist who's always down to perform at a concert or do interviews. Every time I put on the TV, someone is profiling the singer or talking about his contribution to music.
He also gets my love because he's easy on the eyes. Tell me, what man can be sexy sportin' braces?? Uh, just my baby, Sean Paul.
Besides his sexiness, what I also love about him is that he has put Jamaica and the Caribbean on the map, which makes this Trini grrl feel good. Thanks, Sean! ¤ Michelle
