2003 Readers' Poll:
Best and worst in film...
Without further ado, here are the results of the best, worst, and newsworthy of 2003.
BEST MOVIE
Uma Thurman wields her sword in Kill Bill and not only manages to kill everyone in sight, but massacres her competition in our poll.
Kill Bill: Volume I 33%
Lord of the Rings III: The Return of the King 30%
Finding Nemo 11%
Bend It Like Beckham / Matrix Reloaded 7%
Matrix Revolutions / X2: X-Men United / Elf 4%Michelle Picked: Kill Bill: Volume I
Christine Picked: Lord of the Rings III: The Return of the King
Phan Picked: Lord f the Rings III: The Return of the KingLast Year's Winner: Lord of the Rings II
Etc.: Kill Bill not only resurrected Quentin's career, but also wowed movie goers into a this-close win over Lord of the Rings III - which, at the time of the survey, was not even released yet (you can almost taste the anticipation). Finding Nemo was the top grossing movie of 2003, but yet not the best film our readers saw. And there's just no love for two of the biggest blockbusters of the summer, Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle and The Hulk.BEST ACTOR
Johnny Depp, Pirates of the Caribbean 35%
Bill Murray, Lost in Translation 15%
Elijah Wood, Lord of the Rings III: Return of the King / Viggo Mortensen, Lord of the Rings III: Return of the King 12%
Antonio Banderas, Once Upon a Time in Mexico / Tom Cruise, The Last Samurai 8%
Colin Farrell, SWAT / Jim Carrey, Bruce Almighty / Will Ferrell, Elf 4%Michelle Picked: Bill Murray, Lost in Translation
Christine Picked: Bill Murray, Lost in Translation
Phan Picked: Johnny Depp, Pirates of the CaribbeanLast Year's Winner: Edward Norton, Red Dragon
Etc.: Despite all his shenanigans and facial hair, Johnny Depp shows that he's still got it. And Bill Murray pulls an Adam Sandler to place a distant second in his first dramatic performance.BEST ACTRESS
Uma Thurman, Kill Bill: Volume I 46%
Nicole Kidman, The Hours 21%
Halle Berry, Gothika 13%
Carrie-Ann Moss, Matrix Reloaded, Matrix Revolutions / Reese Witherspoon, Legally Blonde 2: Red, White and Blonde 8%
Julia Roberts, Mona Lisa Smile 4%Michelle Picked: Uma Thurman, Kill Bill: Volume I
Christine Picked: Nicoke Kidman, The Hours
Phan Picked: Uma Thurman, Kill Bill: Volume ILast Year's Winner: Halle Berry, Tomorrow Never Dies
Etc.: Although she probably said the least of all the female leads (as she was in a coma for half of the duration of the movie), Uma shows she has enough screen presence to kick anyone's ass. Julia Robert's smile wasn't big enough to garner votes. And poor Angelina Jolie just didn't cut it the second time around as Lara Croft.
WORST MOVIE
Ha! Gigli is as big of a flop as the marketing duo of Bennifer ever was.
From Justin to Kelly / Gigli 26%
Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd 22%
Daddy Daycare 9%
Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star / Freddy vs. Jason / Jeepers Creepers II 4%
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 4%Michelle Picked: Gigli
Christine Picked: Gigli
Phan Picked: Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met LloydLast Year's Winner: Eight Legged Freaks, Jason X, Scooby Doo, and Swimfan (tie)
Etc.: This year, it's only a two-way tie - voters dubbed From Justin to Kelly and Gigli the worst movies of 2003. Which is surprising, considering one was doomed from the start (ahem, Justin and Kelly of reality show fame and no prior acting experience) and the other boasted an all-star cast and an acclaimed director (ahem, Gigli and your pretentious self). Jason Voorhees' horror franchise placed again, prompting us to wonder if the Mafia funds these movies.
Reader Comments: Gigli - this is your brain in a recurring Bennifer nightmare…get the picture?BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT
Matrix Revolutions / The Hulk 20%
The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen 16%
Bad Boys II / Daredevil 12%
Shanghai Knights 8%
2 Fast 2 Furious / Cradle 2 the Grave / Matrix Reloaded 4%Michelle Picked: Bad Boys II
Christine Picked: The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen
Phan Picked: The HulkLast Year's Winner: N/A
Etc.: Oh, Matrix, where did you go wrong? Remember the days of yesterday, when you were fresh and new and innovative? Yes, those days are far behind you. A big, green CGI-ed monster failed to impress moviegoers. And Seabiscuit failed to disappoint anyone, possibly because no one has seen it.WORST ACTOR
The cast of From Justin to Kelly, From Justin to Kelly 38%
Ben Affleck, Gigli 35%
Ashton Kutcher, My Boss' Daughter 12%
Jennifer Lopez, Gigli 8%
Ryan Reynolds, The In-Laws / Vin Diesel, A Man Apart 4%Michelle Picked: The cast of From Justin to Kelly, From Justin to Kelly
Christine Picked: The cast of From Justin to Kelly, From Justin to Kelly
Phan Picked: Ben Affleck, GigliLast Year's Winner: Britney Spears, Crossroads
Etc.: From Justin to Kelly sweeps it again, although Ben Affleck is not far behind. And really, considering the singular entity of Bennifer, if you add Ben and Jennifer's totals up, they trump Justin and Kelly's performances. Surprise: Ja Rule fails to place. Has anyone seen him act? It's just as wonderful as his music.
Reader Comments: Jennifer Lopez (Gigli) - finally! An award J. Lo deserves. But she's still not going to get it.
BEST ON-SCREEN COUPLE
Queen Latifah and Steve Martin take top honours.
Queen Latifah and Steve Martin, Bringing Down the House 24%
Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days 24%
Owen Wilson and Jackie Chan, Shanghai Knights / Will Smith and Martin Lawrence, Bad Boys II 16%
Lucy Liu, Cameron Diaz and Drew Barrymore, Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle 12%
Kate Beckinsale and Scott Speedman, Underworld 8%Michelle Picked: Will Smith and Martin Lawrence, Bad Boys II
Christine Picked: Lucy Liu, Cameron Diaz and Drew Barrymore, Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle
Phan Picked: Will Smith and Martin Lawrence, Bad Boys IILast Year's Winner: Mike Myers and Verne Troyer, Austin Powers
Etc.: Comedic couples take the top spots, while romantic couplings (Renée Zellweger and Ewan McGregor, Down With Love, and Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck, Daredevil) fail to romance our readers.
