2005 Readers' Poll:
The best and worst in music...
Another blissful year has passed, and in true Happygrrls fashion, we couldn't let it go by without asking you about what rocked your world, and what made you very repulsed, not unike the time you found out Tara Reid was getting her own "Taradise." A great big thanks goes to all who voted in the poll...without you, there would truly be no result. You guys rock, but you already know that. A special thanks goes out to Bee, who, again, went to his computer in a fit of rage after a monthful of Christine's nagging, and created the wonderful database that worked day and night gathering the results for us. So, with our imaginary drumroll, we present to you the winners and losers of 2005. (Results have been rounded to the nearest decimal place, just because we wanted to be fancy and scientific about it).
BEST SONG
Although September is long gone, Green Day still wins best song for their rock ballad.
"Wake Me Up When September Ends," Green Day 39.4%
"We Belong Together," Mariah Carey 27.3%
"Gold Digger," Kanye West featuring Jamie Foxx 18.2%
"Hung Up," Madonna 9.1%
"Candy Shop," 50 Cent / "You're Beautiful," James Blunt 3.0%Michelle's Pick: "We Belong Together," Mariah Carey
Christine's Pick: "You're Beautiful," James Blunt2004 Winner: "Yeah!" Usher "I Never Met A Film I Couldn't Sink" Raymond
2003 Winner: "Crazy in Love," Beyoncé "It's Finally Just Me" Knowles and Jay "My Girlfriend's Milkshake Brings All The Boys to the Yard" Z
2002 Winner: "In The End," Linkin "Why Haven't We Done Anything In A While?" Park and "Without Me," Eminem
Etc.: Last year's second place ceremoniously lands in first, with Mariah Carey trailing 12% to land in second place. Madonna surprisingly charts in fourth place, and poor Theory of a Deadman is disqualified from the runnings with a measly 0% voted in for their single, "Santa Monica."BEST ARTIST
Coldplay 31.3%
Mariah Carey 21.9%
Gwen Stefani 18.8%
Green Day 12.5%
Kanye West 9.4%
Kelly Clarkson 6.3%Michelle's Pick: Mariah Carey
Christine's Pick: Mariah Carey2004 Winner: Usher "Where Is the Love?" Raymond
2003 Winner: OutKast
2002 Winner: Eminem
Etc.: Best song doesn't always mean best artist, as Green Day falls into fourth place in this category, behind golden-throated Mariah Carey and Coldplay, the latter of which was glaringly missing from most of the major award shows of the year. Gwen Stefani makes a decent show in third place, while Kanye West will have to settle for fifth. Hey, at least he edged out Kelly Clarkson. And 50 Cent, who put out about fifty tracks this year, doesn't register with our readers.BEST NEW ARTIST
Amerie 26.9%
My Chemical Romance 23.1%
Rob Thomas (of matchbox 20) 19.2%
James Blunt / Natasha Bedingfield 11.5%
Rihanna 7.7%Michelle's Pick: Amerie
Christine's Pick: James Blunt2004 Winner: Ciara
2003 Winner: Beyoncé
2002 Winner: Justin "Closeted One-Hit Album Wonder" Timberlake
Etc.: Amerie leads the pack this year, while rockers My Chemical Romance come in at a respectable second. Rob Thomas, who joins the list of solo acts previously tied to bands, bows out at third. UK exports James Blunt and Natasha Bedingfield will have to settle for a fourth-place tie. And the poor Pussycat Dolls will have to do better than "Don't you wish your girlfriend was hot like me?" to get some votes.
BEST CANADIAN ARTIST
Michael Bublé, the baby-faced crooner with the big voice, enjoys the view from the top.
Michael Bublé 27.6%
k-os 20.7%
Avril Lavigne 17.2%
Esthero 13.8%
David Usher 10.3%
Simple Plan 6.9%
Sum 41 3.4%Michelle's Pick: k-os
Christine's Pick: k-os2004 Winner: k-os
2003 Winner: Our Lady "Did You Know We Had An Album This Year?" Peace
2002 Winner: N/A
Etc.: Rapper k-os is usurped of his title as he trails behind reincarnated rat-pack artist Michael Bublé, who should be feelin' good after a great year. Esthero, who had a new album following a very long hiatus, is like the red-headed step-sister who is loved fourth best. Avril Lavigne edges out her boyfriend and his band by about 14%. Simple Plan manages to place in sixth place, of which they will probably write a song about how nobody understands them.WORST ARTIST
Lindsay Lohan 47.1%
Ashlee Simpson 29.4%
Jesse McCartney 8.8%
Jennifer Lopez / Jessica Simpson 5.9%
Ryan Cabrera 2.9%Michelle's Pick: Lindsay Lohan
Christine's Pick: Lindsay Lohan2004 Winner: Ashlee "I So Did Steal Your Boyfriend" Simpson
2003 Winner: Clay "Who?" Aiken
2002 Winner: Nick "Reunited and It Feels So Adult Contemporary" Carter
Etc.: Ashlee Simpson continues to enjoy your wrath, but not as much as Lindsay Lohan, who had a busy year - she just got out of rehab and won 17% more votes to land in first place. The bland teen "heartthrob" Jesse McCartney lands in third, while Jennifer Lopez and Jessia Simpson share fourth place honours. Ryan Cabrera, who is a product of Joe "I Have a Very Creepy Relationship With My Daughters, It's True" Simpson, comes in last. This is probably because no one knows who he is. And The Backstreet Boys garnered a disappointing 0 votes (disappointing for us, that is).WORST SONG
"My Humps," Black Eyed Peas 36.4%
"These Boots Are Made for Walkin'," Jessica Simpson 33.3%
"Wake Up," Hilary Duff 15.2%
"Get Right," Jennifer Lopez / "Incomplete," Backstreet Boys 6.1%
"Ass Like That," Eminem 3.0%Michelle's Pick: "My Humps," The Black Eyed Peas
Christine's Pick: "My Humps," The Black Eyed Peas2004 Winner: "My Prerogative," Britney "Even Bobby Brown Feels Sorry For Me" Spears
2003 Winner: "Spread My Wings," Shawn "I Never Met A Music Video I Couldn't Cheese Up" Desman
2002 Winner: "Just A Friend," Mario and "Die Another Day," Madonna (tie)
Etc.: The Black Eyed Peas rightly come in first with their horrible, insipid, and utterly stupid "My Humps," while another horrible, insipid, and utterly stupid remake, "These Boots Are Made for Walkin'," comes in a close second. This year marks the first time Eminem has gone from our "Best" categories to our "Worst," but with "Ass Like That," he proves that grown men acting juvenile is not a crowd-pleaser. "Hollaback Girl," by Gwen Stefani, was not loathed by our readers, although it was kind of loathed by us.
BEST DUET
It might be the most trite song currently on high rotation, but "Gold Digger" still wins us over.
"Gold Digger," Kanye West and Jamie Foxx 45.2%
"Dontcha," Pussycat Dolls and Busta Rhymes 19.4%
"Like You," Bow Wow and Ciara / "Signs," Snoop Dogg, Charlie Wilson and Justin Timberlake 9.7%
"I Don't Care," Ricky Martin, Fat Joe and Amerie / "Karmastition," Alicia Keys and Stevie Wonder 6.5%
"Oh", Ludacris and Ciara 3.2%Michelle's Pick: "Gold Digger," Kanye West and Jamie Foxx
Christine's Pick: "Gold Digger," Kanye West and Jamie Foxx2004 Winner: "Drop It Like It's Hot," Snoop "You Can Find My Career Behind the XXX Curtain" Dogg and Pharrell and "My Boo," Usher and Alicia "Seriously, What Was the Music Industry Like Before Me?" Keys (tie)
2003 Winner: "Baby Boy," Beyoncé and Sean "You Used To Love Me Once" Paul
2002 Winner: "Feel It Boy," Beenie Man and Janet "I Don't Have Illegitimate Children" Jackson and "Hero," Chad "Just Look At This Photograph" Kroeger and Josey "I Have Dropped Off the Face of the Earth" Scott (tie)
Etc.: Okay, so technically we cheated by having "Gold Digger" appear twice in the music portion of our poll in the hopes that it would place somewhere. Unfortunately, it wasn't voted Best Song, but Best Duet ain't bad. Second place Pussycat Dolls enjoyed 0 votes in the New Artist category but came back to place second with their joint effort with Busta Rhymes. Ciara and Bow Wow is better than Ciara and Ludacris, while no one really cares about Ricky Martin, Fat Joe, and Best Artist winner Amerie. Alicia Keys won Best Duet last year, but a remix with Stevie Wonder did no favours for her this year.BEST MUSIC VIDEO
"Cool," Gwen Stefani 30.0%
"Mr. Brightside," The Killers 26.7%
"Feel Good, Inc.," Gorillaz 10.0%
"Caught Up," Usher 13.3%
"Don't Phunk With My Heart," The Black Eyed Peas / "Holiday," Green Day / "Trapped In the Closet," R. Kelly 6.7%Michelle's Pick: "Cool," Gwen Stefani
Christine's Pick: "Mr. Brightside," The Killers2004 Winner: "What You Waiting For," Gwen "Culturally Sensitive" Stefani
2003 Winner: "Hey Ya!," OutKast
2002 Winner: "Work It," Missy "Critically Acclaimed and Yet So Broke" Elliott
Etc.: Gwen Stefani takes it again, this time for her melancholy take on being friends with her ex-lover. Plus, she means business when she wears that brown wig. The Killers slide into a close second with their Victorian brothel concept, while the animated Gorillaz take third. R. Kelly can't seem to get enough votes, even though he's got a whopping sixteen versions to his "Trapped In the Closet" saga, as he ties for last with The Black Eyed Peas and Green Day.
