Treats To Die For:
Dufflet Pastries...

Dufflet Pastries (various locations)
YOU WANTED TO KNOW

Just moments after feasting on tasty, bite-sized dim sum dumplings for well over an hour, a friend and I craved something sweet. We considered surrendering to our sweet tooth and going to a coffee shop and choosing from their selection of desserts, but we wanted something a little more indulgent. So we headed to Dufflet Pastries – the mother of all pastry shops.

Dufflet Pastries is the creation of Dufflet Rosenberg, Canada’s answer to Martha Stewart. She opened Dufflet Pastries in 1982, and twenty-four years later she still continues to dazzle her customers by creating culinary works of art. She has been dubbed “The Queen of Cake” by the media.

After walking for 15 minutes in below zero temperature, my friend and I gleefully entered the stylishly decorated Dufflet café. We were a little saddened to see that most of the desserts were almost gone. I checked on the door for the store hours, and realized that they close at 7:00 PM. We were there at 6:43 PM. Not wasting any time, we frantically scanned the display case for anything containing chocolate. Trying to choose which dessert looked the yummiest was a feat in itself. I saw cookies bursting with chocolate, elaborately designed cakes, and fruit filled tarts. I was in heaven! We eventually decided on getting the Key Lime Tart. It didn’t contain much chocolate, but it looked so cute!

Instead of eating there (they were trying to close and all), we took our goodies and headed to a nearby café and ordered coffee. We quickly found a seat and quietly opened our bags (we didn’t want to alert the staff that we were bringing in “outside food”). My friend and I giggled to ourselves as we gracefully devoured our dessert in a matter of seconds. It was exactly what we needed. We sat back in our chairs and felt content in knowing that we made the right decision.

The Key Lime Tart is a three-inch chocolate-crusted tart with light-as-air lime filling, topped off with a few lime slices. I liked that filling wasn’t too intense, but offered a subtle lime flavour. It was the perfect ending to our day of gluttony.

I have been to Dufflet a few times before, and my fave dessert so far is the Double Fudge Tart. If you are a lover of all things chocolate, you must, must, must try it. It contains a sick amount of dark chocolate filling, which is trapped inside an equally chocolaty crust. If that’s not enough chocolate, a chunk of white chocolate sits beautifully in the center of the tart. It’s almost sinful how good it is.

If you’re like me and you enjoy eating desserts that are anything but ordinary, bring your appetite to Dufflet café and dig in! ¤ Michelle
