Ever thought of a career in interior design?

With shows like “While You Were Out,” “From The Ground Up” and “Design Inc.” gaining popularity, Interior Design is now the hottest “It” job to have.

Interior Designers and Decorators have the ability to take a humdrum room and jazz it up to fit your own personal style. Knowing what looks good in a room and where to put is not just a stroke of luck, it’s a skill.

I caught up with Carion Fenn, a successful Toronto-based Interior Decorator and Designer and owner of Carion Fenn Interiors, and had a chance to ask her a few questions about her profession of choice.

When did you know that you wanted to be a Designer?
I was working with an architecture firm and I started getting more and more interested in designing. That’s when I decided to pursue my education in Interior Decorating and Design.

What steps did you take to pursue your goal?
I knew that the only way to achieve my goal was to go back to school.

What is a typical day like for you?
Meeting with clients, checking on jobs in progress, visiting showrooms, designing spaces, paper work, and more.

What do you like most about your job?
I love meeting new people, taking on challenges, working with different personalities and creating what’s right for each client. I like working on specialty projects like model rooms/feature spaces for home shows and television. I always have to design for the public and get into the mindset of what the average person who attends or watches TV shows would like to see.

If you weren't working in Interior Design, what would you like to be doing?
As a Designer, I love what I do in every way possible. There’s nothing else for me – this is it. Everyday I have fun and enjoy what I do, and I wouldn’t do anything else. My career fulfills my professional life in a way I only dreamt about, now it’s real.

What advice can you give to those that would like to enter the field of Interior Design?
With regards to being a designer, I would recommend making sure that you are a creative person. Get an education that complements your talent and pursue your dream to the fullest. Never give up and believe in yourself. If you can believe in yourself, then everyone will believe in you. Always keep your dream alive. ¤ Michelle
