All About Toronto:
Places to dance...
G Spot Nightclub (296 Richmond Street West)I'm not a big clubber, but I have been in and out of clubs once or twice in my youth. From Guvernment to Joker to Helium, a crazy Asian girl could be spotted at least once or twenty times shaking her thang on the dance floor. Of course, if anyone were to ask I would deny, deny, deny. The club scene is something of an acquired taste, though, as I soon found out. Maybe I'm getting too old for this? Or maybe I'm just too lazy.
There have been nights where it seemed like I was the only other person in the club. While you have the whole club and bar to yourself, it doesn't exactly put you in the mood for anything but sleep. And there have been nights where I've been elbowed from head to toe, and pushed by rambunctious, over-eager dance freaks. Please, the dance floor is for everyone, so show what you learned in kindergarten and share. Don't even get me started on the bouncers and the ridiculously long line-ups. It's quite funny when you finally walk in to find the club half empty. It's not so funny when you walk in and find that the club had exceeded capacity two hours ago.
But enough of this rant. G Spot, for me, was one of those clubs that you always pass, laugh at the line-up, and then wonder what the big deal is. One night I found myself wandering in, and finally figured out why it was so popular. The place is huge - it has three floors of fun, fun, fun. (Well, the first floor is actually just a coat-check and washroom area). The second floor spun house and techno that night, while the third floor was split into two main areas. One area had a balcony overlooking the second floor, while the other, smaller room played R&B, hip-hop, and reggae. I was in that room for the majority of the time. At first, it was only a handful of people in there, but in twenty minutes the place was packed. The main appeal for me was the crowd - there are so many clubs out there that seem to target specific age groups or backgrounds. At G Spot, the crowd is very mixed, and the ages range greatly. I especially enjoyed the music that night because, in addition to the latest stuff, there was also ample old school, which I love. And not your usual old school either. There were songs I hadn't heard in a club, ever, mainly because when they were released I was still underage. You could tell the DJ knew a thing or two about mixing - no song lasted well past the chorus. Just so you know, the G Spot is the place to be, baby! ¤ C.Ho.
Update: G Spot is no longer in business. Instead, if you pass by 296 Richmond Street West, you will encounter another club with an equally provocative name. But it's not G Spot.
