Working Girl:
The pangs of first jobs...

I started my first job when I was 17 at my favourite fast food restaurant, McDonald's. I walked in all smiles and I'm still smiling. I don't know if I got brainwashed or something.

My friend, Quyen, and I got summer jobs as cashiers at the McDonald's Africa restaurant in the Toronto Zoo. I thought, "This will be easy, who goes to the zoo anyways?" Okay, lots of people go to the Zoo (to the point where Meadowvale Road was backed up to the 401). And I had to work in the busiest restaurant at the Zoo. There were line-ups at the front counter for four straight hours, and you could not see the end of the line. I suffered through the heat waves and killer bees to serve impatient, irritable, and hungry customers for four straight summers.

I managed to have fun through those grueling hot summers with the crew. We all shared many laughs with games, pranks, and jokes. The job was tough, but overall a fun experience.

I knew my time was up when I started becoming more irritable, so it ended in the fourth summer. My next move was retail; at least I could get some discounts. Yay! ¤ Phan
